Frititi (meaning 'ancient' in the Akan language)is a London-based performing arts company whose focus is on traditional African drumming & dance. It was created to explore, develop & pass on to future generations traditional artistic expressions using music, dance, poetry, drama & rituals.
Its challenge is to project a more positive image of Africa & to help dispel the myths & negative stereotypes of the African continent & its people. Itaims to develop a sense of self-awareness within the individual & a global awareness of Africa & its rich culture.
Founded by Nii Tagoe in 1993 as a non-profit organization, the company has implemented its mission through workshops, performances, youth programs, masterclasses, promotion of new artists, lecture demonstrations, community outreach & creative partnership programs with renowned artists & other performing arts companies. Frititi has also gained considerable recognition representing African performing arts nationally & internationally.
Frititi's carefully-trained entourage of dancers, drummers, musicians, storytellers, singers & acrobats who hail from Africa, Carribean & Europe, are a testimony to London as a magnet for multiculturalism & artistic excellence.
Frititi's repertoire embraces the width, breadth, complexities & subtleties of dance from the African continent. Audiences are treated to an unforgettable mix of music & dance from as far afield as Gambia & the Zulu land, & much in between those 2 countries with Dances like Lo Lo & Egwabo (Ghana), Kumpo (Senegal), Tematei (Ivory Coast), Sindimba (Tanzania), & the Zulu dance Iphi Yeza (South Africa) and many more...
The founder, Nii Tagoe, was born in Accra, Ghana, into a royal family made up of master drummers & singers from whom he inherited his talent for drumming, dancing, & singing.
As the Artistic Director, Nii brings to the group a lifetime's immersion in his deep knowledge of the diverse dance & rhythmic traditions of Ghana.
His experience ranges from years of travel, learning & performing around the African continent (especially in Zulu Land, & throughout Central, South & West Africa.), to touring productions & workshops around Europe, Israel, United States, The Middle East, Japan & Singapore.
