Taraf de Haidouks are currently the most significant and most famous Gypsy ensemble in the world. They are the winners of BBC 3 Radio 2002 award as the Europe's best world music artist, beating the likes of Manu Chao. They performed with the world famous classical musician Yehudi Menuhin, who thus acknowledged their musical prowess. They also had the honor of performing at the opening ceremony of Graz - Europe's Culture Capital 2003 celebration. They set a record by selling out 12 consecutive concerts in a concert hall in Paris. Distinguished music magazine "Mojo" published a 4-page interview with the band, presenting them as a world attraction.
They come from a small town in Romania called Clejami. The band includes 12 members - musicians and brilliant vocalists. Taraf de Haidouks literally means brigands' orchestra. Before 1990, when they were discovered by Belgian musicians and producers Stefan Caro and Michel Winter, they were known only locally. Thrilled by their music, these producers decided to release the album and organize a European tour.
The debut album called "Musique des Tsiganes de Roumanie" delighted critics and fans alike. Their warmth, virtuosity and joy in performing enchant the audience at concerts all over Europe. Soon after, they got invited to prestigious festivals (Montreux, Womad, Bourges, Roskilde, Barbican Center etc).
Their second album "Honourable Brigands, Magic Horses and Evil Eye" won the German critics' world music album of the year 1995 award.
They recorded the third album "Dumbala Dumba" in their native Clejami in 1997.
Guest musicians at their latest album "Band of Gypsies" include their friends Koçani Orkestar from Macedonia, Bulgarian clarinetist Filip Simeonov and percussionist Tarik Tuysuzoglu from Turkey.
They also played a major part in "Latcho Drom", film by French director Tony Gatlif. Guy Demoy made a documentary on them for Channel Art. One of their biggest fans is Hollywood star Johnny Depp, who played with the band in the movie "The Man who cried", and they inspired him to learn Gypsy language.
Over the past few years, their tours were sold out, and concerts in prestigious concert halls, Olympia in Paris and Royal Festival Hall in London, only confirm their status as an international concert attraction.
